The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) is actively moving forward with a series of major development projects aimed at modernizing the country’s aviation infrastructure across multiple cities. One of the key initiatives is the installation of biometric e-gates at three of Pakistan’s busiest international airports—Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi. In partnership with M2P Consulting, PAA plans to deploy around 100 automated immigration gates equipped with AI-powered facial recognition and passport scanning technology. These e-gates are designed to streamline passenger clearance, enhance security, and reduce waiting times, with full implementation expected within the next two years.
In addition to these technological upgrades, PAA has also secured approval to construct a 25-storey, energy-efficient headquarters in Islamabad’s Blue Area. Designed by NESPAK, the new complex will feature green courtyards, a central atrium, six levels of underground parking, and sustainable design elements such as double-glazed glass panels to reduce energy consumption. This new facility reflects the Authority’s growing administrative needs and its commitment to sustainability and modern infrastructure.
Furthermore, the PAA is developing two new international airports—one in Sukkur, Sindh, and the other in Muzaffarabad, Azad Jammu & Kashmir. These projects aim to improve regional air connectivity and support local economies, with both airports receiving an initial investment of approximately Rs. 2 billion each. Construction timelines span the next five years, and land acquisition is already underway.
The Authority is also upgrading existing regional airports. Dera Ghazi Khan Airport is being expanded to handle larger aircraft like the Airbus A320, while Bacha Khan International Airport in Peshawar is receiving airside upgrades and additional parking space. These efforts are aimed at strengthening domestic travel and easing pressure on the country’s major hubs.
In terms of safety and security, PAA has signed a ¥2.2 billion agreement with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to install advanced Explosive Detection System (EDS-CT) scanners and upgrade baggage handling at airports in Karachi, Multan, and Faisalabad. This move represents a significant step forward in enhancing passenger safety and aligning Pakistan’s airports with international aviation standards.
Through these coordinated efforts, the Pakistan Airports Authority is not only modernizing the aviation sector but also laying the foundation for a more connected, efficient, and secure air travel experience across the country.
